4th School of Communication Sciences HeldMatrix Croatica School of Communication Sciences
The seven-day elite School of Communication Sciences was held at Sljeme in Zagreb, at which more than thirty domestic and foreign professors and experts “educated” 12 of the best students of journalism and communicology of the University of Zagreb.
This year’s school was dedicated to the topic of “Children and the Media”, and it encompassed various aspects of media culture and media rights of children and youth. Some of the topics covered included the position of media education in the educational system, children’s literature and theater, the transfer of values through the media, children’s radio and television programs, advertising directed toward children and the commercialization of the media, to new forms of communication via the Internet and the necessity of protecting children’s privacy in the media, as well as protection from potentially harmful media contents. Other important topics were also covered, such as subliminal advertising in the media, treatment of male-female relationships in the media, public appearances, language skills etc.
The School of Communication Sciences is a form of multi-disciplinary professional improvement that takes place outside of the university, organized once a year for the 12 best students of journalism and communicology. The co-organizers, in addition to Matrix Croatica, are the Faculty of Political Sciences and the Center for Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb. Former participants of the School of Communication Sciences remain in contact with the Media Department of Matrix Croatica, and many of them afterward participate in various projects related to the media.
Numerous notable scientists and experts, as well as representatives of state and scientific institutions, participated as lecturers at the School of Communication Sciences. Among them were professors Viktorija Car, Božo Skoko, Igor Kanižaj and Nenad Prelog from the Faculty of Political Science; Danijel Labaš and Jelena Jurišić from the Center for Croatian Studies; Irena Majstorović and Ivana Milas Klarić from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb; Dubravka Zima and Marko Alerić from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb; Nada Zgrabljić Rotar and Zlatko Miliša from the University of Zadar; Zdravko Kedžo from the University of Dubrovnik; Tina Tomažič from the Media Communications Institute in Maribor; Carmen Calvo del Valle from the University of Navarra in Pamplona; Aleksa Bijeliš, Rector of the University of Zagreb; Dijana Vican, State Secretary in the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport; Mila Jelavić, Ombudsman for Children; Gordan Črpić from the Center for Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church; numerous writers, editors, state officials, career development experts etc.
Members of the Program Committee of the School of Communication Sciences are: Branko Lovrić, Danijel Labaš, Igor Kanižaj, Božo Skoko and Klara Čičin Šain. This year’s school was held under the high patronage of the Prime Minister of the Croatian Government, Jadranka Kosor, with the support of the German Foundation Konrad Adenauer, the Coca-Cola Company and the agency for the development of communications skills Coris educa.
